Are you a Cubs fan or a White Sox fan?
July 25 2017
Every year, the Crosstown Classic brings baseball fans together for one of the greatest American rivalries. Which team do you root for? Are you a Cubs fan or a White Sox fan? A South Sider or a North Sider? Do you know everything there is to know about these beloved Windy City teams? Take a look at the lore and superstitions surrounding these two franchises.
History of the Rivalry
The teams' competitive history goes back to the 1906 World Series (the White Sox won), and they have been playing each other regularly ever since, often in charity or exhibition games. MLB began scheduling official interleague play between the teams in 1997, with the White Sox leading that series through the 2016 season.
Curses on Each Side
Most people have probably heard about the Cubbies' billy goat curse, which was finally broken with last year's World Series victory. But did you know that the White Sox were also rumored to have a curse upon them? Some say the bad luck started when gambler-friendly players from the notorious 1919 White Sox threw the World Series. This alleged curse was broken when the 2005 White Sox brought home the Commissioner's Trophy.
What Does the Future Hold?
Many Chicagoans and fans around the world dream of a Cubs-White Sox World Series since few were around for the 1906 matchup. Could it happen again? One sportswriter predicts it will happen in 2020 and offers baseball fans a peek into what it might look like.
